DAY 6
PART 7
I clamped my hand around Bastion’s arm. My knuckles grew white, and I felt the tightness in my fingers. His feet remained planted in place, his mind lost.
Bastion, let’s go!
I grunted loud enough to get my point across.
He tore his arm in the opposite direction until breaking free from my hold. His feet shifted, taking slow, staggered steps forward. A trembling hand reached down, picking up a lock of Lace’s hair. It was still attached to a piece of her scalp.
Within just a matter of days, I’d become numb to the sight of blood. But my heart hadn’t shielded over to wash away emotional pain. I couldn’t imagine what he felt. I hurt; a deep sadness that rooted itself inside of me. If I ached like this, what about him? His reason to go on was now nonexistent. What happened was beyond horrific.
Stay strong, Oshin. He needs you.
I approached him again, this time with a gentle touch to his arm. My fingers applied pressure, a soft squeeze to get his attention. I pointed to the door. We didn’t know when they’d be back for us—this might’ve been our only chance to get out.
He clenched down on a clump of his hair, his chest heaving. If we could shed tears, sorrow would soak his cheeks.
I’m so sorry for what happened, Bastion. But, your grieving will have to wait. I won’t let them take you too. Forgive me.
Under the pressure of the situation, I did the only thing that came to mind. Faster than I thought possible, my hand shot out and pulled the triangular weapon from Bastion’s grip.
Okay, Bastion. Maybe this'll get you to listen.
I brought the makeshift knife to my throat, my stare burning into his. He stood straight and stiff, caught off-guard. I pressed the sharpened edge harder against my neck until my skin bulged on each side from the pressure.
He released the grip on his hair and swooped out an arm to stop me. But my mind was sharp, focused. I stepped back to avoid his advance.
Please let this work.
One. Two. Three. Four. Only around six more steps to reach the corridor.
I shuffled my feet back until darkness swept over us. At the far end, a spiraling red light warned of danger.
Keep going.
My back hit the door, and I bore my weight against it.
Click.
The door inched open. Halogen bulbs flooded our surroundings with light. It was the same medical room where they’d taken my blood sample. Two white doors were on the opposite side of the room. There’d been so much going on the first time I was there that I couldn’t recall which one I’d entered.
Bastion wasn’t a dumb man. He’d figured out my intentions. He looked back down the empty corridor before smacking his hand across a nearby drip bag. It flopped to the pristine, waxy floor like a dying fish. His arms lashed out, taking hold of a tray. Medical tools flew against the wall, clanging in every direction.
Shut up, Bastion!
I knew his emotions had erupted.
